Research: Video game addiction

Upon researching the addiction to video games, I found many useful streams of information to assimilate how and why such an addiction could be a truly detrimental behavior. There are many symptoms that one may exhibit while the addiction takes hold of them:

preoccupation to the game itself, while away from it. Downplaying computer use, they de-emphasize the amount of time they actually spend playing on the computer or a particular game. The Lack of control, They are incapable of controlling the amount of time they spend playing such a game. Loss of time,  this I fear is the most important or most detrimental, playing for hours through the night, when the true intention was to sit down for a few minutes can and I believe will have lasting effects through that persons life, both socially and professionally. Negatively impacting other areas of life, Neglecting your social and professional responsibilities. Projects go unfinished, personal hygiene neglect. Defensiveness, denial is often attributed along with the defense of ones actions towards the time spent playing. Misuse of money, an addicted gamer may spend an exorbitant amount of money on games, computer systems and software. This becomes a greater problem if those funds are meant for bills, groceries, and other necessities. Mixed Feelings, the use of the substance, in this case – the game, the person may feel euphoric, but that euphoria is soon followed by guilt. Guilt may be felt either over what the person is doing while online or simply the amount of time spent.

To combat the addiction, and this could be any addiction, we all must have self control over our actions!

  1. I think it’s interesting that this article points out the reasons why addictions occur. There are many factors that play into addictions but its one thing to identify the problem but its another thing to know how to solve the problem. Its very easy to say that people need to curb their habits but they’re called addictions for a reason. I would love to see how this article develops in terms of giving resources for people to cut their addictions seeing that it does such a good job in showing the many ways that addictions are detrimental to people. I think its easy to say that addictions ruin peoples lives. But do people need to completely quit these addictions in order to better their lives, or do they need to learn to curb their habits?

    1. kadeejah7295, I think theres a fine line there! Do people really believe they are addicted? If they are aware they why would they continue to engage in the activity knowing it could possibly have detrimental consequences. I think yes, people need to realize or have someone bring it to their attention they may have an addiction. Curbing ones habits is also quite difficult, considering we are creatures of habit.

      I’ll try and delve into this in more detail as part of my research.

      1. I think knowing that you have a problem and making the conscious decision to keep doing something that’s detrimental to you is all apart of being addicted! Now the problem is how to separate yourself from the desire to want to do wrong. I think addictions are different for everyone. Like you said, there are some people that need to be told that they are addicted and then they’re those addicts that chose to be addicts while being conscious of their decision to do so. You also have to remember that the word “addiction” means something different to everyone.

        I always admire when I hear people give testimonies of their sobriety. obviously you wouldn’t be talking about alcohol but i do think it would be interesting to talk about the moment that someone decides to change their life an not continue to do what is harmful to them.
