Research: Negatives and Benefits in Gaming and Computers

Almost 60% of children have computers in their homes, showing the increase in technology and use of the internet for resources, games, and information. In “The Impact of Home Computer Use on Children’s Activities and Development,” they mention in their research that more children spent time on homework and reading newspapers or magazines with a computer in their home than someone without one. Also, they happen to spend less time watching television. Parents without computers worry that this will increase the risk of obesity by decreases time spent being active. While there is no research that guarantees this theory, it is recommended that people only spend an hour a day in front of game console, computer or television. While games have their benefits to society, it is beneficial to limit the time for more than just staying active. For instance, there is research that shows gaming can cause seizures from blinking images or even hand injuries. It can affect the eyes, wrists and back.
Once again, this does not mean that videogames are completely negative. It has been shown that games have helped people with cognitive skills and mild increases of academic performance. These cognitive skills are important for problem solving and learning new languages. Games can help with repetition that help with a child learning material, like studying for exams.
Utilizing computers in the classroom will help students to engage in their work and also allows for diverse ways to learn, rather than just a lecture. To avoid certain health issues, games should refrain from flashing images as well as children limiting their game use to 1 to 2 hours a day.
